I%26#39;m staying at the Hyatt McCormick Place and see the Red Line Cermak/Chinatown station is about six blocks away (about 3/4 mile). I like to walk, but wonder how safe that neighborhood is. For a single woman who%26#39;s not too afraid of the big city, is walking during the day okay?
Walking from Hyatt McCormick to Red Line Station
Yes, it%26#39;s safe. I wouldn%26#39;t do it after dark when alone, but wouldn%26#39;t hesitate during the day. Check with the Hyatt for shuttle buses, though, they%26#39;d be much more convenient.
Walking from Hyatt McCormick to Red Line Station
Thanks pgo! I had the same thought on shuttles you did.
The Hyatt says they run them on the hour from 11:00 am to 7:00 pm. They drop hotel guests off at touristy spots as far north as the water tower, but they don%26#39;t pick up. The #3 bus stops right outside the hotel, but that doesn%26#39;t get me everywhere I want to go, though I do plan on using that when I can.
The Metra Electric Station at McCormick is also an option.
cabs are all over the place, can always cab it back, shouldn%26#39;t be very much.
I%26#39;ve walked it during the day with a friend who is a former Marine. He wasn%26#39;t very comfortable (which I hassle him about to this day) but I thought it was OK, though I don%26#39;t know if I would feel as safe if I was alone, and I agree with the previous post about not walking it at night. Several panhandlers and several funnly looks over a relatively short walk. The Metra station at McCormick doesn%26#39;t run very often outside of rush hour and is also very ';isolated'; and apparently isn%26#39;t used that often by people going to or staying at McCormick which we found odd. But it is a good option if you don%26#39;t mind the limited numer of stops. You can take it to Millenium Station and then walk a few blocks to the Red line. You can walk around McCormick place to get to the lakeshore and walk, or there are some interesting neighborhoods east of Michigan avenue where we felt safe walking, but it is a long walk especially at this time of year when it is hot and humid. But if you don%26#39;t mind parting with a few bucks each time you want to go out, I would just take a cab to the Roosevelt station.
