Chicago July 3-7 and Hotel 71

Hi to the experts.

We plan on being in Chicago during the independance day celebrations. I%26#39;ve just read the postings on the party (lunacy) that is prevalent at that time. We%26#39;re planning on doing the regular stuff - Shedd, architecture tours, Taste of Chicago, Field, Adler, and Navy pier and some blues and jazz , athough in no particular order.

We are planning on staying over at Naperville on the 2nd (Ribfest) and getting to the hotel by noon.

I%26#39;m travelling with my wife (both approaching 50) and my 10 year old son.

Could I have some thoughts on the above and hotel 71, please and thank you

The Hotel 71 has mixed reviews. Take a look at the hotel reviews in the Chicago Hotel section of this web site. If your reservation is cancellable, Hotwire is showing availability for your dates with some decent rates.

Downtown will be crowded during your visit. My only tip is to hit the Shedd early in the morning. The lines can get long during the day.

May we ask how much your rate at Hotel 71 was? I would be happy to see if i could research to find a better deal on Hotwire or elsewhere.

Hotel 71 - was 144 Canadian - roughly 130 US from expedia.

I would highly recommend consideration of a deal on Hotwire. Hotwire is a deep discount service where you are shown a series of listings for your date. The listings provide amenities, zone (area the hotel could be in), star rating and price. However, you are not told the hotel until after purchase and, at that point, it is not refundable.

Search for 2 adults and 1 child on Hotwire for July 3-7.

You should see a 3* in the Mag Mile-Streeterville area with the amenities: fitness/restaurant/internet/pool/business. The price I%26#39;m seeing is $93; you may see a slightly different price. Click on the ';see hotel deals'; link and scroll to the bottom of the page, where you should see a 4.5/5 tripadvisor.com rating.

While I cannot guarantee what hotel this is, I%26#39;m going to guess that, given the 4.5/5 rating showing, it is likely the Hilton Garden Inn Downtown. If it is, that would be a nicer option than 71 - and for less.

You can also get a suite at the Homewood Suites for $169. This would also be a more expensive option, but would offer a full kitchen, living room area, bedroom, free breakfast and free light meal on M-TH nights. This is a non-refundable rate, and please make sure to select a 1 bedroom king suite instead of the smaller studio suite. The 1BR king suite is the same price

Other options include the Westin River North for about $164 per night via a combination of deals. If you%26#39;re willing to split your time at the Westin and try to all work with 1 bed, you could get a Club Floor room for the first 2 days and a regular room for the second two days for the same price.
