I am planning to visit Detroit this weekend and have plans to go to Canada for a day. After that I will be left with three days and am trying to find out which are the best places near Detroit (dont mind 4-5 hours drive). All I can think of is Chicago.
Can anyone suggest some great places to see near Detroit? Anything from beaches to adventure is fine with me, or even a happening city will do. I am new here so dont know much about places.
Trip from Detroit to Chicago
You might want to post in the Michigan Forum and your likely to receive quite a few varied responses. You can search through the past posts about places to visit and see around Detroit. The Henry Ford Museum and village, is a big draw in Dearborn, Mi. There are parks and places to see and visit along the shoreline. Greektown for food is popular downtown Detroit. Comerica park for a ballgame if your so inclined too. Generally north of detroit, the Algonac area and up to Port Huron and further are lovely drives. (In Michigan terms, the right and lower side of your thumb lol) . The tip of the ';thumb'; has many quaint towns and lovely views of the water. Same for right on up along the east shore along Lake Huron. The Michigan forum is where you will find the answers. The Northwestern areas of Michigan (little finger on your hand) are probably 4-5 hours. That whole west side of the state, down the Lake Michigan side is great, actually, alot of Michigan is great. I havnt even mentioned Mackinaw Island at the top of the lower pennisula, (tip of your second finger)i.e. movie ';Somewhere in Time';. LOL.. or for your next visit the Upper Pennisula of Michigan, but I digress.... needless to say.... there is alot of options, you need the Michigan forum LOL Good luck and see you over there.
Trip from Detroit to Chicago
If you don%26#39;t mind driving... instead of going to chicago... go to Saugatuck (great little Lake Michigan beach town) or Grand Haven or Traverse City. All would be within the time limit, and a lot of fun. Otherwise, if you want amusement parks... go to Cedar Point in Northern Ohio, it%26#39;s between 2 - 3 hours of Detroit and has the most rollar coasters in the states... or go to Startford Ontario for some great summer theater!
All of the suggestions so far are good. You can easily spend two days at The Henry Ford. Another popular draw is the Cranbrook Community in Bloomfield Hills just north of the city. It%26#39;s the former estate of publisher George Booth and has a science and art museum and several buildings designed by Eliel and Eero Saarinen.
Saugatuck and Mackinac are good suggestions You could also head to Ohio and visit the islands in Put In Bay, east of Toledo or the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland. It would only be a 3 hour drive from Detroit to Cleveland.
