We are renting a condo at Lake Point Tower this weekend, from what I remember, this area is pretty safe to be walking around in the evening from Navy Pier, right?
My husband and I will probably be cabbing it, but the teenagers will probably be walking around the area, they should be fine, right?
How is the Ohio Street Beach?
We plan to get a few groceries once we arrive, isn%26#39;t there a grocery store in the building, or one nearby?
Thanks!
Lake Point Tower
This is my neighborhood. I live within a few blocks and am by there literally every day in the morning and often for an evening walk.
Generally it is pretty safe.
Recently, for reasons that escape me, it looks like there has been gang activity at night in and around the tunnel running under Lake Shore Drive at Ohio Street. It must be relatlvely late at night since I have never actually seen the gang members, but the signs are obvious (graffiti and broken glass). I would keep my eyes open there after about 8:00. I have not heard of any actual crime. I just see the signs of the activity in the morning.
During the day it is perfectly safe. Pickpockets, as anywhere, may be an issue. I would make sure that wallets are secure. For men, that simply means putting the wallet in a front pocket most of the time. Be careful in any crowds.
Ohio Street Beach is pretty nice. It is literally across Grand from Lake Point Tower.
Another place to check out is Olive Park, which is immediately east of Ohio Street Beach. The views at the end are some of the best in Chicago.
I believe there is a small grocery store in the building. However, about one long block away at Illinois and McClurg is Fox and Obel which is an upscale grocer with a great bakery. One block farther west at Illinois and Fairbanks is Dominick%26#39;s, which is a conventional grocery store.
I have not been yet, but Copper Blue, the restaurant on the south side of Lake Point Tower, gets some great reviews.
Lake Point Tower
It was unclear in your post whether you thought otherwise, but lake point tower is steps from navy pier. No cab will be needed unless you have physical limitations.
From LPT to Navy Pier is about a two minute walk. There is a small park between LPT and NP.
To Michigan Ave. (up Illinois and then up the stairs to Michigan) is about ten minutes at an easy pace. The Hancock is probably 15 to 20 minutes, but I would probably make that walk more scenic by walking up the lakefront path to Oak Street Beach and then crossing under Lake Shore Drive at Oak Street and then walking back down Michigan Ave. the two or three blocks to the Hancock. You could then head back down Michigan to Ohio to get back to LPT.
Thanks for the great info, Skeeter1 !
