Supermarket

I know this must seem like an odd question (given the many more exciting things we could be doing in Chicago !), but we%26#39;re staying in a self-service apartment and will need to stock the fridge.

We%26#39;re staying near Clark/Division and I%26#39;d like to know if there are any supermarkets nearby (or even downtown).

Another question - a grocery store to me is the same as a supermarket (at least in Oz)... but I get the impression that in the US a grocery store is a smaller (convenience style) outlet, not a full product lineup - is that right ?

Supermarket

I believe there is a Jewel/Osco on the corner of Clark %26amp; Division, the website wouldn%26#39;t let me check for locations. Jewel/Osco stores are usually pretty large and have a full selection of food etc.

A supermarket and a grocery store mean the same thing to me, some other examples in Chicago are Dominick%26#39;s, Whole Foods (more expensive, leans towards organic) and Trader Joe%26#39;s (more eclectic selection, mostly their own brands) a convenience store or mini mart is what I would call a smaller store with less selection (7-11, White Hen, etc.).

Supermarket

I agree,

Supermarket and grocery store are interchangeable.

Like pop, cola, coke, and soda

Yes there is a Jewel at Clark %26amp; Division. It would have anything you need. However its not the nicest store in the world.

There is also:

Treasure Island - Clark and Elm

POTASH BROS - delaware and state

And if you have a car, the newest and nicest, a Dominicks at Division and Clybourn.

Word of advice:

Do some research yourself. Use google or yahoo maps. Zoom around on the maps. Get a lay of the land. How far places are. etc....

Thanks for your advice ... Google Maps, here I come !

Sign up for the Jewel Preferred Card (free @ the information desk - if it requires a US address just make it up - they will give you the card that day though.) The preferred card is the only way to get quite a few of the in-store sales each week.

Actually, I prefer Treasure Island over Jewel/Osco, but I shop at the one on N. Broadway in Lakeview.

Treasure Island has a much nicer selection of specialty (gourmet and imported) goods than does Jewel/Osco, IMHO.

Good tip on the preferred card DVD, the prices at Jewel are ridiculous if you don%26#39;t have one. I have a Vons card for when I visit Los Angeles once or twice a year, same deal there.

That is an interesting point about the Vons card.

I use my dominicks card at safeway (in scottsdale).

And just looking at the safeway web site now, I see they also own vons.

So I wonder if you can use a dominicks card at vons?

Or any of the 8 stores Safeway owns?

I don%26#39;t know about the interchangability but when I got it years ago, it was simple to get. Can%26#39;t remember if I used my address or my relative who lives there though...
