Chicago trip

We are thinking of visiting Chicago at beginning of September and hope to spend approx 4 days there. Is this enough time and what else is there to visit in surrounding areas. We are wondering whether to do a fly drive starting at Chicago and then possibly touring down to Washington DC. Do you think this is feasible and is the scenery good. If not anybody got any ideas of an alternative fly drive which would start in Chicago and possibly take in the great lakes. We love fantastic scenery (have travelled to Yosemite- Death Valley etc previously) so are definately looking for the Wow factor.

You can get a good taste of Chicago in four days. There are tons of things to see and do here and in the surrounding areas. It depends on your particular interests. www.enjoyillinois.com

While you could certainly get a good taste of Chicago in 4 days, I would try to stay longer. Our family NEVER stays anyplace more than 3 or 4 days, but we spent an entire week in Chicago a year ago and I wished that we had had even more time there.

I have not made the drive from D.C. to Chicago (we live outside D.C. now), but I think you might do better by driving to D.C. from Norfolk, do your sightseeing and then leave your car there and fly to Chicago. There are many airlines that fly from D.C. to either Midway or O%26#39;Hare and you can often get very good deals. I beleive there are also hotels (mostly around Dulles Airport as opposed to National Airport) which offer free parking while you are gone if you book a night there before your flight (BTW, you don%26#39;t need a car in Chicago--the public transportation system is great and parking, I understand, is very expensive.)
