How bad is the construction on I-90 DRE? I will be driving in next Friday for the weekend and I saw on a website where there was an ongoing construction project. Are detours clearly marked? Or should we be ok? We will be arriving in town around 1:00pm, so rush hour shouldn%26#39;t be a problem.

If you can avoid coming in during the am/pm rush hours, it%26#39;s not that bad. The detours are well marked, but not really necessary at 1:00 PM. As you approach the metro area, listen to am 780 for traffic reports every 10 minutes.

I agree with Dave about listening to traffic reports but I%26#39;ve hit some of the worst traffic midday on the Dan Ryan during construction on a Friday heading into the city and recently on the stretch of 80/94 around the Indiana border, once again midday. It might not be rush hour for commuters but there are a bazillion trucks out there.

And Friday is the hardest day to predict, people leave early for the weekend in the summer.

The detours are well marked, if you find yourself backing up on 80/94 while you are still in Indiana you can exit at Cline Avenue North (912) which merges into the Skyway. From the Skyway, you can take the Stoney Island detour to Lake Shore Drive. ($2.50 toll).

Or if you get past Indiana and start backing up, follow the Stoney Island detour.
