IMO the Marriott is a good base. It%26#39;s in between our Millenium park and all the Mag Mile shops. There is a chain Irish pub called Fado a couple of blocks over from the Marriott.

Depending on what weekend you are talking about, we have Venetian Night on July 28th, which is a boat parade where the boats are decorated with lights.

Or try a neighborhood fest. http://tinyurl.com/2k549a

Take an architectural boat ride along the river and lakefront.

Take an ';L'; ride to Wrigleyville for Cubs game, if they are in town that weekend. If you go to Wrigleyville, check out the Irish Oak.

OK,

I am going to pick on you a bit. Something that I have always wondered. Why would you come to Chicago/the U.S. and want to visit an Irish pub? I have always been curious about this.

For instance, I love to go to Scottsdale. Go there every year. But I would not go out of my way to eat pizza or steak or Italian food while I am there. I go and enjoy the great local Mexican/southwestern food.

Just a curious Yankee.

There%26#39;s another Irish pub (more emphasis on ';pub'; than ';Irish';) called Garrett Ripley%26#39;s on Clark Street near Superior. There are also quite a few other bars in that general neighborhood if you want a change of scenery partway into the night. Their beer is what you%26#39;d expect. Food is some of the best bar food I%26#39;ve ever had.

During the day, consider going to a museum to get out of the heat. The Art Institute is my personal favorite, but we have many to choose from.

Marriott on Mag. Mile is a great location for visiting chicago. I recommend taking the architectural boat tour on the river...lots of fun history there. Fado%26#39;s Irish pub is right down the street from you. Howl at the Moon is a popular touristy bar in the area. You may want to check out Rockit bar/grill on Hubbard St (down the street from howl at the moon). Rush %26amp; Division has some more touristy nightlife. McFaddens is a younger crowd on Sate and Division for a fun nighttime bar...and Bella lounge is right next door. Cabaret is another club across the street from Rockit. There%26#39;s another Irish bar, I think its O%26#39;Callaghans (on hubbard). A new club/lounge opened a few weeks ago called Manor that seems to be a new hotspot.

As for dinner...there are tons of places in chicago. Chicago style deep dish pizza is a must...from giordanos, pizzeria unos (right next to your hotel), or loumalnattis. There%26#39;s a great Columbian steakhouse further north on southport and lincoln called Las Tablas (one of my favorites). A popular sushi place near ur hotel is Japonais, a brazilian steakhouse called Fogo de Chao. If you%26#39;re looking for a steakhouse, there is Mortons, smith %26amp; wollensky, gibsons, tavern on rush, carmines, etc. There are some really good BYOBS further north if u want to venture out. For example, Tango Sur, HB, Las Tablas...they are all over.

Definitely hit up a cubs game in wrigleyville (addison stop off the red line). u can catch the redline on grand avenue next to Rock Bottom. Be sure to get to the wrigley bars before and after the game...you can%26#39;t beat Wrigley in the summer!! There%26#39;s an entire street of bars in wrigley on clark st., along with the popular Cubs bars like Hi Tops, Cubby Bear, Murphys Bleachers, Sports Corner, etc.

Check out www.metromix.com. its a chicago website and u can search all these retaurants and bars. you can see whats happening the weekend/days you are in chicago, etc.

hey thanks everone for the replies much appriciated and to answer one of my ';critics'; lol the reason i always hunt out the irish bars is because unless im wrong they are the only bars in america that serve magners cider and thats my drink of choice but im open to contradictions and hey thanks again

louthmale99, I truly recommend your investing in the CTA visitor%26#39;s pass and enjoying as much of the city as possible. The visitor%26#39;s pass will more than pay for itself.

Now I%26#39;m not sure that these have your cider of choice, but the ones I%26#39;d recommend are not near the Magnificent Mile, nor are they all Irish pubs...

Duke of Perth is a Scottish pub on N. Clark Street. They have all-you-can-eat fish n%26#39; chips specials on Wednesday and Friday nights for under $10 - and a huge selection of scotch and other thirst-slakers.

The Red Lion Pub is a British pub on N. Lincoln (and supposedly one of the most haunted places of Chicago). It%26#39;s in the immediate vicinity of the historic Biograph Theatre (now home to the Victory Gardens theatre troupe). The alleyway behind the Biograph Theatre is where John Dillinger was shot by the authorities after being betrayed by the Lady in Red.

The best Irish pubs in the city are, arguably, Chief O%26#39;Neill%26#39;s and Abbey Pub. Both are quite a bit away from where you are staying and I%26#39;d suggest taking a cab there and back. Chief O%26#39;Neill%26#39;s has a nice Sunday brunch as well.

And, on N. Southport Avenue (which is a really nice area with boutique shops, restaurants and the Music Box Theatre - a mini-movie palace built in 1929 which shows classic, silent films, documentary, foreign, cult and art films and has live organ music on weekends between shows) is Cullen%26#39;s. It has Irish bands and other music nightly and good food.

N. Southport is 5 blocks west of Wrigley Field, so if you were going to a Cubs game or be at Wrigleyville, this would be an excellent time to explore N. Southport.

Agree with the suggestion of Venetian Night down at Monroe Harbor - also there%26#39;s a concert at the Jay Pritzker Pavilion that evening tied in with the festival.

If you like to read, the Newberry Library Book Fair is that weekend. And, and at Washington Park (immediate to the Newberry Library), is the Bughouse Square Debates - important reminder of Chicago%26#39;s history and can be quite interesting to boot.

Have fun when you are here!

If you plan on going to the north side, Graftons (their menu shows your drink on it) is a good place. Owned by a few Irish guys. See:

thegrafton.com The Emerald Loop Club is a newer Irish bar much closer to your hotel at 216 N. Wabash that is pretty good.
